Trades marketing in Winkler, Morden and the Pembina Valley

Winkler and Morden are neighbouring, growing cities in Manitoba's Pembina Valley. Trades here compete on reputation inside close communities, so reviews, referrals and a clear two-city service area matter most.

Winkler and Morden are Manitoba's twin cities of the Pembina Valley, about 13 km apart and joined by a four-lane divided highway, according to Winkler's Wikipedia article. Winkler had 13,745 residents in the 2021 Census and Morden 9,929, by the list of Manitoba municipalities. Both are growing, and together they form one of the most interesting small markets in the province for a trades business.

The Pembina Valley market

Winkler is about 100 km southwest of Winnipeg and the largest city in the Pembina Valley. The same article calls it the economic hub of southern Manitoba, with a retail trading area of an estimated 17,000 households. It also lists Winkler as the province's third-fastest-growing city, behind Morden and Steinbach.

The local economy leans on manufacturing: around 30% of Winkler's workforce is in the industrial sector, making products such as recreational vehicles, mobile homes, farm equipment, and windows and doors. Health and education are the next-largest employers, and the surrounding farms grow potatoes, wheat, canola, corn and beans and raise livestock.

For a trades business, that produces a customer base with:

  • homeowners in two growing cities
  • farms and acreages across the valley
  • manufacturing and industrial sites that need maintenance trades
  • builders working on new housing for a growing population

Close communities, quick word of mouth

The area was settled by Low German-speaking Mennonites from 1875, and most Winkler residents are of Mennonite descent, according to the same source. More recent arrivals include German-speaking families and returning Mennonites from Latin America, and nearly a third of residents speak a non-official language at home.

What that means for marketing:

  • Reputation travels fast. Families, congregations and workplaces overlap. One well-handled complaint can do more for you than a month of ads.
  • Recommendations come first, Google second. People ask someone they trust, then look you up. Your reviews and Google profile need to confirm what they heard.
  • Language can be a real advantage. If someone on your team can serve customers in German or Plautdietsch, say so plainly. If not, keep it simple and clear in English.

How we would plan a Pembina Valley campaign

  1. Two city pages, not one. Winkler and Morden each get an honest page with local photos and the work you do there.
  2. Named towns around them. Pages and ad locations for the smaller communities and rural municipalities you serve in the valley.
  3. A small, careful ad budget. Google Ads aimed at high-value jobs, scheduled to the hours someone answers.
  4. A referral list. Builders, manufacturers' maintenance managers, farm-equipment dealers and suppliers often send steady work. We help you track it with our referral relationships service.

Seasonality

A worked number helps here. If 17,000 households shop in Winkler and only one in a hundred needs your trade in a given month, that is 170 potential jobs a month in the trading area, before Morden is counted. Even a modest share of those, won through reviews and referrals rather than ads, can keep a small crew busy.

Long, cold winters drive heating and plumbing demand, while building, roofing and outdoor trades follow the construction season and the farm calendar. Seeding and harvest are busy times for farm customers, so planned work is easier to discuss before or after them.

Mistakes to avoid in the valley

  • One "Winkler-Morden" page that reads as if you are from neither
  • Advertising across the US border by accident with a wide radius; the Walhalla–Winkler crossing is only about 20 km south
  • Promising language service no one on your crew can provide
  • Assuming a good reputation doesn't need reviews; newcomers can't hear it otherwise

Where to start

Start with your Google profile and a review routine, then the two city pages. See the regional centres guide for budget maths, the pricing page for plans, or contact us. We are a marketing and consulting service, not a contractor; we help valley customers find the work you already do well.

Frequently asked questions

Should I market Winkler and Morden separately?

Yes. They are separate cities and customers search with their own city's name. One good page for each, with photos of work in that city, does better than one combined page.

Is it worth marketing in German or another language?

Only if your team can serve customers in that language. If someone on your crew speaks it, saying so on your profile and website can help, but never promise service you can't deliver.

Do ads work in smaller cities like these?

They can, with small, tightly targeted budgets. Search volume is lower than in Winnipeg, so the money often goes further on high-value jobs, and reviews and referrals carry more of the load.
