Trades marketing in Brandon and Westman

Brandon is Manitoba's second-largest city, but its real market is the whole Westman region. Trades here win by making the surrounding towns and farms see them as local, not just the city.

Brandon is Manitoba's second-largest city, with 51,313 residents in the 2021 Census and 54,268 in its census metropolitan area, according to its Wikipedia article. The more useful number for a trades business is the trading area: the same source puts it at more than 190,000 people across the Westman region and parts of southeastern Saskatchewan. If your marketing only says "Brandon", you are talking to about a quarter of your market.

The Westman market in brief

Brandon sits on the Assiniboine River in western Manitoba, about 214 km west of Winnipeg and about 120 km east of the Saskatchewan border. It is the main commercial centre for the region. Agriculture leads its economy, with education, food processing, manufacturing, health care, business services and transportation also important.

For trades, that mix produces three groups of buyers:

  • City homeowners in Brandon itself, who search like customers anywhere: urgently, on a phone, comparing reviews.
  • Rural and small-town customers across Westman, who often hire on recommendation and expect you to know their area.
  • Institutional and commercial buyers, including the education and health-care sectors and agricultural businesses, who buy through relationships, quotes and paperwork.

Brandon University, Assiniboine College and the Manitoba Emergency Services College are all in the city, and CFB Shilo is about 30 km east. Each brings rental housing, staff and families who move in and need trades without knowing anyone yet. Those newcomers rely on Google reviews more than long-time residents do.

How we would approach marketing in Westman

Make the city profile strong

In Brandon, the map results are less crowded than in Winnipeg, so a complete, active Google Business Profile with recent reviews can climb quickly. We start there.

Reach the towns by name

Customers in surrounding towns search with their own town's name, or with "near me" from far outside Brandon. We build honest service-area pages for the towns you actually drive to, describing the work you do there and how you schedule it, and run Google Ads by named town rather than by a radius that sweeps across the Saskatchewan line.

Use the relationships that already exist

Rural work often comes through equipment dealers, lumberyards, co-ops, builders and other trades. A tracked referral relationship list is often the cheapest growth available in Westman.

Seasonality and the farm calendar

Winter is long here, as everywhere in southern Manitoba, so heating and plumbing calls spike with the cold. But Westman trades also feel the farm calendar. Seeding and harvest are poor times to reach farm customers about anything non-urgent, while the weeks after harvest and the depth of winter are good times to talk about planned upgrades, shop heating and building projects.

A simple Westman calendar:

  1. After harvest: contact farm and acreage customers about planned work for winter.
  2. Freeze-up: heating trades lift budgets in Brandon and the larger towns.
  3. Late winter: outdoor and building trades book spring work, including through builders.
  4. Seeding: keep city campaigns running; slow rural outreach.

Common mistakes in Brandon marketing

  • A single radius campaign that pays for clicks from towns you won't drive to
  • Using the same page for Brandon and every town around it, with only the name changed
  • Ignoring reviews because "everyone knows us", while newcomers to the city choose the competitor with recent reviews
  • Running ads at full speed during harvest for farm services nobody has time to book

Where to start

If most of your work is in the city, start with local search and reviews. If most is rural, start with your referral list and town pages. Either way, the regional centres guide shows how to split a budget. See pricing or contact us. We are a marketing and consulting service, not a contractor; your crew does the work, and we help Westman find you.

Frequently asked questions

Should a Brandon trade advertise in Saskatchewan?

Only if you are licensed and willing to work there. Brandon's trading area reaches into southeastern Saskatchewan, so radius targeting can pick up searches across the border. We use named locations so that only happens on purpose.

Is local search worth it in a city of 51,000?

Yes. There are fewer competitors than in Winnipeg, so a well-built profile often reaches the top three sooner. The gap is usually in reaching the surrounding towns, which is where service-area pages come in.

How do I market to farms and acreages?

Farm customers often hire through recommendations, suppliers and equipment dealers. Referral relationships and a strong review history usually matter more than ads for that work.
